Gravitas Ventures announced today that it has acquired worldwide rights to Pigeon Kings, a documentary that takes audiences through the backyards of South Central Los Angeles, where a fascinating subculture of men are devoted to tumbling pigeons. The doc will premiere worldwide on demand on April 14, 2020
We watch as enthusiasts breed and train their birds for the Birmingham Roller Pigeon World Cup, where birds must fly together and somersault in unison, like a flock of synchronized swimmers in the sky.
Pigeon Kings is directed by Milena Pastreich with Bow and Arrow Entertainment’s Matthew Perniciaro and Michael Sherman producing alongside Christine Beebe (Hal). Bow and Arrow recently premiered three documentaries at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival: The Truffle Hunters, The Fight and Disclosure: Trans Lives on Screen.
“I’m so excited to be working with Gravitas. They immediately connected with our story and understood that our film had broad appeal” said director Pastreich, “I’m thrilled to share a slice of the Roller Pigeon hobby and introduce the two amazing subjects of our film, Keith London and Choo Choo, to the world.”
After premiering at the 2019 Seattle International Film Festival, Pigeon Kings went on to win the Special Jury Prize for Excellence in American Profiles from the 2020 San Francisco Independent Film Festival, the Audience Award at the 2019 Eastern Oregon Film Festival and play the 2020 Pan African Film Festival.
“It’s always fascinating when a documentary shines a light on a facet of American life you had no idea existed, and it’s even better when the documentary captivates you in and makes you a part of its world for 90 minutes. Pigeon Kings does just that: the documentary puts you on the ground in South Central L.A. and leaves you looking up to the sky for more,” said Gravitas Ventures Acquisitions Coordinator, Brett Rogalsky.
Pigeon Kings will premiere on multiple platforms on April 14, 2020.
Bow and Arrow brokered the deal with Gravitas.
