A German adaptation of the noisy social experiment format Meat the Family, called GewissensBISSE? Das Fleischexperiment locally, will launch on VOX on September 14 at 8pm.
The series, which was originally produced by Spun Gold TV for Channel 4 in the UK, is produced in Germany by Redseven Entertainment.
Meat the Family asks how much we really know about the animals we put on our plates by inviting meat-loving families to share their homes with the animals they’d normally serve up for dinner: from chicken and sheep to pigs and even cows. Three weeks later, the families must decide whether to give up meat and send their animals to a sanctuary or have them slaughtered and eat their former house guests.
When the series aired in the UK it provoked significant domestic and global media attention, with The Guardian calling the show “fascinating” and “packaging a quiet ethical consumption message up in the cosy familiarity of primetime TV”.
A local adaptation of Meat the Family also aired on DR in Denmark, where it was produced by Snowman Productions. The format is distributed internationally by Red Arrow Studios International.
