Romantic comedy Plus One from Studio71 US has won an Audience Award at the 18th annual Tribeca Film Festival. The new movie had its world premiere there on April 30.
Written and directed by Jeff Chan and Andrew Rhymer, Plus One stars Maya Erskine (PEN15) and Jack Quaid (Vinyl) as longtime friends Alice and Ben, late 20-somethings who, after seeing everyone they know decide to get married, agree to be each other’s plus-one as they endure an endless parade of weddings.
The film also stars Ed Begley Jr., Beck Bennett, Rosalind Chao, Brianne Howey, Jon Bass and Finn Wittrock. The producer credits are shared by Ross Putman, Jeremy Reitz, Deborah Liebling, Greg Beauchamp, Jeff Chan and Andrew Rhymer.
Plus One won the Audience Award for Best Narrative Feature.
“These stories are crowd pleasers and united audiences at the Festival,” said Tribeca’s Paula Weinstein. “Our audiences laughed their way through the screenings of the romantic comedy Plus One… we were honored to world premiere these films and know audiences elsewhere will love them as much as ours did at Tribeca.”
“So many of the people who worked on Plus One met in New York, and bringing the film back to this city has been an overwhelmingly emotional experience,” said Chan and Rhymer. “We are over the moon excited by the audience response to our film and can’t wait to share it with the rest of the world when it releases on June 14!”
Executive producers are Ben Stiller, Nicholas Weinstock and Jackie Cohn for Red Hour Films, and Michael Schreiber and Dan Weinstein for Studio71 US. Lunacy Productions’ Stu Pollard and Harris McCabe, Inwood Road Films’ James Short and John Short, and Milan Chakraborty also executive produce.
RLJE Films have picked up the US rights to film, and will be releasing it in the US on June 14.
