Nippon TV has announced that the local Japanese version of “The Last Cop” is to return for a second season following its acclaimed first season on Hulu Japan and Nippon TV.

Produced by Nippon TV, the drama is based on the successful scripted format “The Last Cop” distributed by Red Arrow International.

“The Last Cop” was the first original drama to be commissioned by Hulu in Japan, and Season One aired on both Hulu and Nippon TV in summer 2015 to ratings and press acclaim.

The Japanese version sees acclaimed actor Toshiaki Karasawa play the lead role. His film credits include “20th Century Boys”, “Toshiie and Matsu”, and “The Waste Land”. He was also the voice for Tom Hanks in the Japanese version of ‘Toy Story’ and “The Polar Express”.

In scripted format “The Last Cop”, a detective is seriously injured during a mission and ends up in a coma. He wakes up over two decades later to a modern world that has completely changed. As he struggles to come to terms with his new life, he embarks on an unstoppable mission to find out who put him in a coma and bring them to justice.

This high-octane and action-packed crime procedural is based on the hit German series “Der Letzte Bulle” – Sat.1’s most successful crime series ever. Remake adaptations include French version “Falco”, now in its fourth season on TF1 in France and outperforming the channel average by up to 135%; a record-breaking production for Channel 5 Russia; and productions in the Czech Republic and Estonia.

“The Last Cop” won Best Scripted Format at this year’s 2016 International Format Awards at MIPTV in Cannes.
