Gravitas Ventures has acquired North American rights to Bad Therapy (fka Judy Small), starring Alicia Silverstone (Clueless, American Woman), Rob Corddry (Hot Tub Time Machine, Ballers), Michaela Watkins (Wanderlust, The Back-Up Plan, Casual), Haley Joel Osment (The Sixth Sense, Secondhand Lions, Pay It Forward), Aisha Tyler (Death Sentence, Axis, Archer), Sarah Shahi (Bullet to the Head, Alias, Old School), David Paymer (City Slickers, State And Main). The film was directed by Bill Teitler, written by Nancy Doyne and produced by Gina Resnick and Teitler. Bad Therapy will be released theatrically in New York, Los Angeles and other major cities on April 17 and will be simultaneously available on demand.
In a quest for self-fulfillment, Susan Howard (Silverstone) convinces her husband, Bob (Corddry), to see a marriage counselor. The therapist, Judy Small (Watkins), appears at first to be competent, intelligent and trustworthy. But in the course of the therapy, Bob and Susan’s emotional dynamic triggers Judy Small’s own dark, buried impulses and in a comically escalating series of manipulations, Judy Small pits Bob and Susan against one another, bringing their marriage to the breaking point.
“To have the chance to work with actors with the comic chops of Alicia Silverstone, Rob Corddry, Michaela Watkins and the rest of the hilarious and wonderful cast was a dream come true. And I could not have made this film without key collaborators, in particular, my DP, Rob Givens; Costume Designer, Aggie Rodgers; Editor, David Leonard, Composer Nathan Larson, Producer Gina Resnick, and most of all, Nancy Doyne, the writer who created these indelibly rich, funny, flawed characters,” said director, Bill Teitler.
“Bill has drawn out hilarious performances from a stacked comedic ensemble. We look forward to North American audiences taking this crazy, wonderful ride,” said Tony Piantedosi, Vice President of Acquisitions at Gravitas Ventures.
Piantedosi negotiated the deal with Endeavor Content and lawyer, Thomas F. Hunter.
